The UK’s largest contemporary art festival, Liverpool Biennial, has revealed its full programme for its ninth visit to the city. This year the festival, which runs from 9th July to 16th October, will involve over 40 artists from across the world. Artists from Australia, Belgium, China, France, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Russia, Taiwan and the UK will create work for a range of locations across the city.

The festival has been devised in a series of episodes, each offering fascinating and unique perspectives and insights, which will draw inspiration for the city’s past, present and future:

  • Children’s Episode
British artist Marvin Gaye Chetwynd will create a film entirely cast, directed and produced by young people from Liverpool. Japanese artist Koki Tanaka will revisit the city’s 1985 protest against the Conservative Government’s Youth Training Scheme, leading original participants and their children on a walk retracing the protest route.
  • Ancient Greece
Tate Liverpool will exhibit the city’s breath taking collection of classical Greek sculptures, as well as new commissions by artists from across the globe.
  • Chinatown
Liverpool’s heritage as having the oldest Chinese community in Europe will be reflected across the city in locations such as supermarkets and Cain’s Brewery.
  • Flashback
Birkenhead-born artist Mark Leckey will present his film Dream English Kid, which is inspired by some of his life events between the 1970s and 1990s, and will be screened at the former entrance to renowned nightclub Cream.
  • Software
A range of artists will explore interactions with technology
  • Monuments from the Future
Artists will offer their perspective on what the city might look like in the future

The festival will also feature the John Moores Painting Prize, Bloomberg New Contemporaries and the Biennial Fringe.
